Fun Events in Virginia Beach: The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center
Posted on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by destination tips travel
If you decide to take a family outing to Virginia Beach rest assured that your choices include more than just getting some sun or playing in the sand. A trip to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is the kind of family day that you don't want to miss. Once you explore this detour from the surf and sand, you will discover such delights that await you under the sea. After all, where else can one count more than 50 species of fish as they swirl in a pool of colors within a 70,000-gallon Chesapeake Bay Aquarium.
The Center offers families the opportunity to see the wonders of Virginia Marine life. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has two very colorful Pavilions, the Bay and Ocean Pavilion as well as the Marsh Pavilion. The Pavilions are connected by a natural bridge which leads from one Pavilion to another. The natural beauty only adds to the anticipation of what you will encounter in the next building that you are about to enter. You can experience a diverse mixture of active exhibits ranging from touching a stingray to picking up a horseshoe crab. The center affords the opportunity to explore another world and experience that world through touch, sight and sound.
Before you know it, you have entered a fun filled learning environment full of natural animal exhibits which include horned owls, seals, otters, sea turtles, and sand tiger sharks. The sea turtles in particular, come in a wide range of sizes and one of the larger sea turtles weighs over 250 pounds.
There is another area of interest that the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center offers along with the colorful scenic sights that bring the marine life up close and personal. The sights and sounds can be found right in front of you in their own IMAX Theatre where they present the wonderful beauty of the sea with all its colorful creatures on a screen so large that you'll believe that you are actually swimming in the ocean right along side those creatures. The movies take place in a 300 seat theater and people are taken on a 3D journey to the Deep Sea and Under the Sea. You can learn about the wonderful creatures that live in the ocean and gain a new respect for the beauty of their environment. The total experience will appeal to children as well as the child inside each an every adult. Come experience it for yourself!
