Irene in Long Beach New York - WCTV

The Northeast and New England are bracing for Irene.The most powerful wind and rain are close to New York City - and many parts of Manhattan looks like a ghost town. In the nation's largest city - it's hard to find anyone on the street. The outer-bands of Irene are hitting Manhattan with strong winds and rain. Businesses are shuttered, subways and buses are shutdown and the Broadway theaters are closed. "everyone should go inside and stay inside until tomorrow." The massive storm is also creating tornado's and it's believed one of those twisters ripped this Delaware building apart. Strong winds are hitting Maryland - knocking down trees. More than a million people in the Northeast have been told to evacuate, many in coastal areas which are getting pounded by powerful waves. On Long Beach Long Island the Lassiter family grabbed as much as they could and got out.

"We're expecting this place to be pretty washed out when we get back."

"Here in Long Beach you can already see the water building up on the streets. Once the storm strengthens its believed more than 160-thousand homes in this area could be at risk of flooding."

Irene ripped through North Carolina and Virginia with 100 mile per hour winds. Thousands of homes have been damaged and more than a million people are without power. Now the storm is soaking the mid Atlantic as it moves up the east coast. States in the Northeast and New England are in emergency mode. Many airports are shutdown and some 9-thousand flights have been canceled. In Boston the Red Cross is preparing ready for the worst.

"I think all the planning we've done statewide is going to show how ready we are to respond to something like this."

A storm of this magnitude is rare in the northeast - and the worst is yet to come.
