San Mateo motorcyclist killed in crash on Kings Mountain Road - San Jose Mercury News

Stewart Sutter spent his life seeking thrills on skateboards and snowy slopes, but little compared to the rush of racing his motorcycle down a twisty mountain road. It was an obsession that cost the 32-year-old his life Tuesday, but one his older brother said he understood and shared.
"Our thing was, 'Let's get muddy. Let's ride skateboards. Let's ride dirt bikes,' " Joey Sutter told The Daily News. "If we fall, we fall."
The younger Sutter died in a high-speed motorcycle crash on Kings Mountain Road north of Huddart Park Road at about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol reported. The San Mateo resident lost control of his 2008 Triumph while braking hard, sailed up a sloped shoulder and collided with a tree roughly 10 feet away, CHP Officer Art Montiel said Wednesday.
Stewart Sutter, who was wearing his helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is too early in the investigation to say exactly how fast he was traveling or why he tried to stop so suddenly, Montiel said.
"It could be anything at this point," Montiel added, ticking off possibilities such as another rider or animal in the roadway.
Joey Sutter, 40, said his brother was an avid skater and snowboarder growing up in the Bay Area. He broke a lot of bones as a result.
"He was all about the thrill," Joey said.
Stewart got into motorcycles a few years ago, his brother said. After graduating from the trade school WyoTech, he took a job at
Motion Pro, a motorcycle shop in San Carlos. Joey said he remembered warning his brother to take it easy when he bought his 2008 Triumph."It was a sweet bike," Joey said. "I told him, 'You need to be careful. That's a fast bike.' "
But Stewart was partial to testing boundaries, which he frequently did as the youngest of four siblings, Joey said. That free spirit carried into his adult years.
"He had no responsibility. He would just jump on his bike and go. And that was beautiful," said Joey, adding that he gave up his own thrill-seeking ways after becoming a father four years ago.
Though he spent much of his life walking on the wild side, Stewart paused now and then to reflect, his brother said. While going through his things Wednesday, the family found a journal in which he wondered why he couldn't love a mundane activity such as sleeping as much as skating.
"He was a beautiful guy," his brother said.
Services for Stewart Sutter are still being arranged. He is survived by three siblings and his parents.
The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the Tuesday crash to contact Officer W. Torr at 650-369-6261.
