SURFISDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Nearly a year after losing its restaurant tenants, the Surfside Beach pier is expected to get a facelift with an initial $60,000 in improvements.

During a Town Council meeting held Tuesday night, town leaders agreed to invest $60,000 or more in improving the wood pylons located throughout the pier.

The decision came just moments before town leaders would vote down, at least temporarily, an engineering firm's plans to add more improvements including a second floor to its restaurant space.

"I'm more concerned with tax payer dollars I don't want to see us spend thousands of dollars that could be invested by the private sector," said Surfside Beach Mayor Allen Deaton after Tuesday's meeting.

The pier space has been a constant source of controversy and confusion ever since Nibils' owners left the town in November of 2010. Since then a number of attempts to lease the space have resulted in problems for both the town and those trying to invest.

Town leaders have not yet announced when those $60,000 in repairs would take place.
