Sometimes you just get lucky on "The Amazing Race."

That's what happened to twins Liz and Marie, former beach lifeguards who apparently never learned how to set up a beach umbrella in the wind. They badly bungled a relatively easy challenge that involved arranging beach chairs and umbrellas. They cried and fought for hours. They were prepared to get eliminated.

But, in the end, it didn't matter. This was a non-elimination leg. So, the lucky twins live to race another week.

GOING TO 'BUCKET'

The teams started the leg in Indonesia with clues that directed them to Phuket, Thailand. Several said they had always wanted to see Thailand, but few knew how to pronounce Phuket ("bucket," "puck-it," etc.).

Snowboarders Andy and Tommy and father/ son team Zac and Laurence quickly blew their leads with bad airport planning when they ended up on flights arriving well after the teams behind them.

Despite all the build-up, the airport drama amounted to nothing. The dock where their next task was located did not open until 8 a.m. So, once again all of the teams were bunched up in a single group. (Is it just me, or does that seem to be happening more and more this season?)

WIND AND CURRENT

The challenge was a nod to the 2004 tsunami, which devastated parts of Thailand and affected the coral reefs and tourism industry. The teams had to choose between building an underwater coral nursery or setting up beach chairs and umbrellas.

Neither task turned out to be easy. Thanks to the currents and the rough water, several teams abandoned the coral challenge and switched to the beach chair task. That cost them valuable time and left them exhausted.

The beach chair challenge was hampered by the wind (which looked like a bad day at the Jersey Shore with umbrellas blowing all over the place). Twins Liz and Marie, who boasted about being former beach lifeguards, had the most trouble. They didn't seem to know how to put up beach umbrellas in the wind (dig, girls, dig!).

Once again, Andy and Tommy emerged in the lead thanks to their strong swimming skills on the coral reef task.

USELESS SAILORS

The next task was a very cool looking rock climbing challenge on rock formations out in the ocean. A few teams, including engaged couple Ernie and Cindy, got lost on the way there because they didn't use their compass correctly.

Surprisingly, sailors Laurence and Zac, the youngest person to sail around the world, managed to get lost on their boat on their way to the Pit Stop. "What a bunch of useless sailors we are," Laurence said.

PIT STOP

After the rock climbing, the teams headed to the Pit Stop at Koh Panyi, a floating fishing village. Snowboarders Andy and Tommy took first, again. They won $5,000 each. "You guys absolutely smoked this course," Phil said.

Twins Liz and Marie headed to the Pit Stop preparing themselves for elimination. "It's like riding to our death," said one of the twins (I still can't tell them apart). But they were relieved to hear Phil say it was a non-elimination leg. They will start out next week in last place, with an added Speed Bump as punishment.

NEXT WEEK

Is this a race around the world? Or a race through Asia? It looks like the teams remain in the region for another week, headed for Bangkok. The preview shows them riding elephants and Liz and Marie missing a bus and running out of money.

•Former Vegas showgirls Kaylani and Lisa, who were booted last week, gave an interesting interview to Daniel Fienberg of HitFix about their departure.
