VALDOSTA — VALDOSTA — Valdosta State's women's soccer team won its 10th game of the season, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 3-0 on Saturday at the VSU Soccer Complex.

The Blazers (10-3) got goals from three different players, and goalkeepers Olivia Mills and Hong Tran combined for a shutout.

Valdosta State head coach Mel Heinz was pleased with her team's performance.

"This is a good win," Heinz said. "It looked good on the field and on the scoreboard, so I'm proud of them.

"They're a strong team, but I think that we were doing a lot of good things. ... I think tonight the best thing I saw with this team is that they played smart and they played together, and that's what we need."

Valdosta State is now 7-0 at home this season.

"They love playing for their friends and playing for their families," Heinz said.

In the 20th minute of the game, Valdosta State's Blakely McClellan sent a through ball to teammate Margaret Stauffer, who got past the defense and found herself one-on-one with Palm Beach Atlantic goalie Allison Fox. Stauffer shot to the top right corner and beat Fox to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

In the 40th minute, VSU's Morgan Cutts corralled the ball in the middle of the box, turned and fired into the top right portion of the net for her third goal of the season. Cutts is tied for the team lead in goals with Rebecca Miller and McClellan.

"For us to score on a strong keeper like that, it makes you feel good," Heinz said.

In the 69th minute, a Palm Beach Atlantic defender was called for a hand ball in the box, and the Blazers were awarded a penalty kick. Karly Lentz took the kick, and shot towards the upper left corner of the goal. Fox got her hand on the ball, but it deflected off of her hand and into the goal, giving the Blazers a 3-0 lead.

The goal made Lentz the 13th different Blazer player to score a goal this season.

"They definitely take turns (scoring the goals). They're all working so hard. And the great thing is, if someone doesn't score, they're happy for the one that does," Heinz said. "It's certainly a team effort."

Valdosta State's defenders kept the ball out of their box most of the night. The Sailfish only managed two shots on goal, and Mills stopped them both.

Seventeen VSU players played in the win. Tran, the reserve goalie, got her first action of the season, playing the final 21 minutes.

The Blazers will travel to Anderson (S.C.) next Wednesday. Their next home game is next Saturday, when they host West Alabama at 4 p.m. in a Gulf South Conference game.
