Lexington police were trying Saturday to identify and locate someone thought to be connected to three hotel thefts in September.

In each theft, someone stole money from hotel lobby cash boxes while employees were distracted, police said.

The thief caused the bathrooms at the hotels' lobbies to flood, then reported the problem to the hotel staff as accidental, police said.

When the hotel employee went to check out or clean up the water, the thief went behind the lobby desk and stole money from the cash box.

In at least one theft, the thief fled in a red, older-model Honda Civic, police said.

Police said they think the same person is responsible for a Sept. 18 theft at Marriott Springhill Suites on South Broadway, a Sept. 26 theft at Courtyard Marriott on Pleasant Ridge Drive, and a Sept. 27 theft at Ramada on North Broadway.

Police have asked that anyone with information about the person or the thefts call the commercial burglary unit at (859) 258-3700.

Tips also can be submitted by cell phone. Text "tips2020" plus the message to CRIMES (274637), or go to Bluegrasscrimestoppers.com and submit a tip online.
