Sets on the beach - The Quad News
Posted on Sunday, October 2, 2011 by destination tips travel
After two weeks of anticipation and rain rescheduling, hundreds of Quinnipiac students gathered on Friday as part of Phi Sigma Sigma and Delta Tau Delta's first co-sponsored beach volleyball tournament, Sets on the Beach.
In an attempt to raise money for each Greek organization's philanthropy, both groups agreed that volleyball was the best solution before the weather turned.
The Phi Sigma Foundation, which is the philanthropy group of Phi Sigma Sigma directly supports the National Kidney Foundation, said to Heidi Hitchen, President of Phi Sig.
The other half of the $600 raised went to the Delt's charity, Movember, where men go the entire month of November without shaving their facial hair in order to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.
There were both Greek and non-Greek teams in the event. Regardless of affiliation, everyone showed up to win.
"It's actually a lot more competitive than I thought it would be," said junior Michael Weiner, who competed in the tournament. "I didn't think I'd have as much of a competitive spirit. It's equal parts fun and drive to win."
Aside from all the competition, the real goal of the night was to bring students together.
"Greek life here is just so different from other schools," said Jess Kraus, a junior and co-coordinator of the Sets on the Beach tournament. "We thought that by working together we could help more people and show others who aren't involved in Greek life how great it is here and how many good things we do."
The amount of competitors in the event was another plus side of the evening.
The amount of people who showed up was better than expected, said James Dineen, a senior and co-coordinator of the event.
"I think it's a good turnout. With the rescheduling due to the rain, it's pretty good," he said.
But the bonding did not just come from the sand pit; it also came from the sidelines.
"I think this is great that Phi Sig and Delt are coming together for two great causes and to support Greek unity," said Allison Clemmey, a sophomore, spectator and sister of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
When the tournament was drawing to an end, only two teams remained to face off in the finals, ACE, the last remaining all non-Greek team, and Piece of Pi, brothers of Pi Kappa Phi, the newest fraternity to come to Quinnipiac.
After the dust cleared, ACE came out on top to win the tournament winning 21-15 and each member received a gift card to iTUNES.
