Quarterback Edward Aldag threw for 217 yards as Class 6A fourth-ranked Mountain Brook rolled over Thompson 40-13 at Larry Simmons Stadium in Alabaster.

The win set up next week's Region 6 showdown with Hoover. Both the fourth-ranked Spartans and second-ranked Bucs are 8-0 and 6-0 in region play.

"This is a game I think the fans will love, the media will love, and to me there's seven weeks left in the season," Mountain Brook coach Chris Yeager said. "We've earned the right to play for a regional championship next week and we're playing an unbelievable opponent. I think our kids have improved enough to be ready for this challenge."

The Warriors fall to 1-7 and 0-6.

After going three-and-out on their first possession, the Spartans scored on their next six possessions, including a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown by Gavin Golsan.

Yeagar was pleased with his team's performance.

"Our goal coming in was to be a little better football team than last week and I think we did that," Yeager said. "Our defense seemed to be running on eight cylinders the whole game and our offense started off slow, but they were able to pick it up."

Mountain Brook's defense held Thompson to 69 rushing yards and shut down Thompson's leading rusher Dee Tolbert, holding him to no yards rushing until a 28-yard touchdown run by the sophomore to make it 37-6 with 5:19 to play in the third.

Mountain Brook running back Mark Rector carried the ball 18 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns.

"He did a great job of finding holes and seams, but more importantly he held on to the football and I was real pleased with that," Yeagar said.

Mountain Brook's Golsan had five catches for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Thompson's Avery Hale hauled in six catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. Thompson coach Caleb Ross was proud of his performance.

"Avery's been a good player for us all year," Ross said. "I'd put him up against and receiver in the region. He's been outstanding all year."
