Flames engulf Dania Beach restaurant, parts of Griffin Road closed to traffic - MiamiHerald.com

A Dania Beach landmark restaurant was engulfed in flames early Tuesday morning.

At about 3:50 a.m., Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Hollywood Fire Rescue were dispatched to Tropical Acres Restaurant, 2400 Griffin Road, said Keyla Conception, spokeswoman for Broward Sheriff's Office.

Crews extinguished the fire and evacuated neighboring homes.

Tropical Acres is a steakhouse and seafood restaurant. The eatery has been family owned and operated by the Studiale family since it began business in 1949. It recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.

"Serving the best food at sensible prices in a friendly, caring atmosphere is what we do best, and we believe this is what keeps our guests coming back," reads a description of the eatery on their website.

According to preliminary reports, the fire started in the laundry room in the back of the restaurant and spread to adjacent back rooms. The main dining area has water and smoke damage. The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

While fire crews investigated on Tuesday morning what may have caused the fire, both directions of Griffin Road between 23rd and 29th streets remained closed to traffic.

This is the second Broward County landmark restaurant to burn within the last two days.

Crabby Jack's, a Deerfield Beach island-themed bar and eatery, was charred on Sunday.

"My immediate response was how could this happen, especially thinking about Jack's," said Jack Studiale, 60, Tropical Acres owner.

While Crabby Jack's was destroyed, it looks like Tropical Acres will be able to resume business.

Miami Herald partner the Sun Sentinel contributed to this report.
