Campaign debate

The Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Association will sponsor a City Council candidates' debate 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the council chambers, 1315 Valley Drive.

Al Benson of the Neighborhood Association, a former council candidate, has said three of the four candidates on the November ballot have confirmed their intention to attend the debate.

The debate will be televised live and re-aired on Time Warner cable Channel 8 and Verizon FIOS channel 31. For more information see HBneighborhood.org.

Organizers will ask candidates to address "public safety and quality of life issues" and "the future of residential and commercial development" in Hermosa.

Some of the questions will be drawn from a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health report "Reducing Alcohol-Related Harms in Los Angeles County."

Campaign event

Park plans

The Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Advisory Commission will hold a public hearing 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the City Council chambers, 1315 Valley Drive, on proposed plans to improve South Park, located on Valley Drive.

The Commission is seeking public comment on options for the location of two new volleyball courts and the potential revision of the park's master plan to include a nonprofit-operated community garden in the northwest corner.

The hearing follows the August decision by the City Council to set aside $150,000 in grant money from Los Angeles County for South Park improvements. Proposals include extending a play area and upgrading it to make it universally accessible, replacing play equipment and removing bleachers and an unused hockey rink.

Girls' night

Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach, formerly The Wellness Community-South Bay Cities, is taking reservations for the ninth annual Girls Night Out "fun-raiser" Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 4-6, at The Comedy & Magic Club,1018 Hermosa Ave.

This popular "just for ladies" event celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness. Festivities begin each night at 5:30 p.m. with the opening of the bar and a silent auction, followed by dinner, live auction, and a lineup of top comedians.

Seats can be reserved at $85 per person by calling 310-376-3550, and tickets can be bought online at www.wellnessandcancer.org.

Proceeds will help fund cancer support groups. Sponsors include Providence Little Company of MaryMedical Center Torrance, Glass Family Foundation, Macy's, Weintraub Communications Consulting, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Torrance Radiology Medical Group and South Bay BMW.

Donors come through

About 50 people donated blood last weekend at a Hermosa drive honoring the victims of the 9-11 terror attacks.

The drive brought 40 pints of blood to Providence Little Company of MaryHospitals. In addition, 12 donors joined the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.

The blood drive was sponsored by Hermosa Beach Hand Carwash & Detail Center, Fritto Misto restaurant and Whole Foods Market.

School recognized

The private Fusion Academy & Learning Center, with 10 California campuses including one in Hermosa, has been ranked 3,989th on Inc. magazine's annual "Inc. 5000" list of the nation's fastest-growing private companies.

The alternative private school for students in grades sixth through 12th was named to the list for its rapid and sustained growth over the past two years, in which it opened eight of its campuses.

This marks the second time the school, which was ranked 62nd among education companies on the list, has been featured on the Inc. 5000.
