CAPE CORAL, FL -

Test results came back confirming the water is safe at the Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach. The Lee County Health Department had said the water was contaminated with bacteria that could make swimmers sick.

But we found out the warning signs on the beach were not enough to keep everyone out of the water.

Health officials say the contamination happens after rainfall and can be a health concern. Still, that hdidn't keep everyone away from the water.

"It was fine, but now the signs are up so we can't swim," said Ronald Jarvis, who was visiting the area from England.

Jarvis hoped to take a dip in the water Thursday but says with a no swim advisory in place, he avoided jumping in until officials gave the OK.

Sally Young, of Cape Coral, said more visible signs were needed in the area to warn potential swimmers of the danger. After fishing on the pier, she let her 6-year-old son Benjamin cool off in the river.

"We came straight to the pier, so we didn't even know that there was an advisory out," she said.

Officials said anyone who chooses to swim, despite the warning, can suffer abdominal pain or diarrhea. They especially encouraged children and older adults to avoid the water.

For some, though, it seemed tough to resist getting their feet wet. "I guess that's as far as we'll go," said Jeannette Geoffrion of Cape Coral. "We have a pool at home, but they wanted to see the beach, so I guess they'll play in the sand."

The next routine beach water sampling of 13 public beaches will be taken on Monday, October 3, 2011, with results available 24 hours later.
