Boise -- A 10-year-old who went looking for a missing hunting dog in heavy sagebrush Thursday night found a mountain lion instead.

When the boy turned to run, the lion chased him and eventually scratched his arm and hand though, surprisingly, she did no other harm.

The boy's father shot his handgun into the air to scare the big cat away.

The names of the boy and his father were not released. The confrontation was near their Mores Creek subdivision home 15 to 20 miles from Boise.

Idaho Fish and Game conservation officers, an off-duty Meridian police officer, a Boise County sheriff's deputy and four dogs searched for the lion this past week and they found it when its eyes reflected their searchlights.

The party fired several shots from handguns and a rifle, and killed the lion.

Mountain lion attacks such as the one Thursday are rare, Steve Nadeau with Idaho Fish and Game said. It was just the second recorded instance of a mountain lion injuring a human in Idaho, he said.
