JENSEN BEACH — Defending district champion Lucy Robson garners most of the headlines for the Jensen Beach girls golf team, which has its sights set on a second consecutive District 18-2A golf championship this week.

But senior Maddy Smith might be the golfer, who has had the greatest impact this year for the Falcons (11-1-1).

"Her ball-striking is significantly better," coach Mike Thurman said. "She decided she wanted to play college golf, set her mind to it and worked so hard. That work has paid off."

Taylor Long, Bettina Almeida and Courtney Long all return as well, giving the Falcons a deep, experienced team that went on to place fourth at state last year.

"I know when I talk to these girls that they wholeheartedly agree that there are bigger and better things to come," Thurman said. "We're going in hungry. They have that desire and drive that I've seen is so critical going into the tournaments."

First, though, the Falcons must get past Vero Beach at the District 18-2A tournament on Tuesday. Vero Beach, the district runner-up last year, is the only team that beat Jensen Beach this year, although Robson missed that match.

"We know they're the competition and we're going to have to be at the top of our game to get by them," Thurman said.

In the boys District 18-2A championship on Monday, it is Jensen Beach that will be chasing Vero Beach, which went undefeated in the regular season for the second year in a row. Vero Beach is the only team that beat the Falcons (13-2) this year.

"With us getting to regional as a team last year, our goal this year was to get to state," Falcon coach Larry Sweazey said. "We don't look past districts, though. Our No. 1 goal is to win the district and then place in the top two at the region."

Jensen Beach was the district runner-up last year. Matt Glass, Justin Aurslander, Stefano Butti and Oliver Tranter all return from that team. Liam Snyder, who previously golfed at Martin County, rounds out the top five. His addition increased the depth of the team, which Sweazey said has been a key factor this year.

In the boys District 19-1A tournament, Pine School again will c ompete for a spot at regionals. The Knights were the district runner-up last fall and have everyone back from that team, led by sophomores Nick Gagliardi and Mo Hobbs.
