"The dry fly fishing here lately and even during the heat of the summer has been fantastic," said fly fisherman Donny Carter of Stratford, a regular visitor to the trout stream in McCurtain County."The brown trout fishing on Spillway (Creek) has been the best I've seen since the mid-1990s."The same is not true for Oklahoma's other year-round trout stream, the Lower Illinois River near Gore. The Lower Illinois River was the site of a recent fish kill because the river was so low that oxygen levels dropped to lethal levels. Catfish, paddlefish, walleye and bass were among the species of fish found dead in the river. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did release water into the river from Tenkiller Lake last week in response to the fish kill. However, the trout stocking in the Lower Illinois River by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has been suspended indefinitely.
