And the winner is: Chicago O'Hare (but before the gloating begins, consider Logan made the top ten). Using Federal Aviation Administration's latest Runway Safety Report and other runway safety statistics Travel + Leisure magazine looked at the 35 busiest US commercial airports to see which had the most near misses and other runway incidents over the past five years (2006–2010). The ranking took into consideration both the number of incidents as well as the relative severity, giving additional weight to those in which there was a greater chance of a collision.

Here are the Top 10 problem airports:

1. Chicago O'Hare

2. Cleveland Hopkins

3. Los Angeles International

4. San Francisco International

5. Honolulu International

6. Miami International

7. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International

8. Phoenix Sky Harbor

9. Boston Logan

10. Dallas Fort Worth

According to a former director of FAA runway safety, two-thirds of runway incursions are caused by pilots ignoring instructions from the tower. And the great majority of those errors, Wes Timmons told T&L, don't involve commercial pilots but smaller private planes so airports that play host to more pilot training or flight schools tend to see more problems.
